Maasvlakte Oil Terminal NV

WE HANDLE APPROXIMATELY ONE-THIRD OF ALL THE OIL IMPORTED TO ROTTERDAM

MOT N.V.

Maasvlakte Oil Terminal N.V., or MOT N.V. for short, is one of the largest oil terminals in the world. As a joint venture between well-known oil companies, we have played a key role in the logistics chain between oil producers and the five Dutch refineries for over 45 years. Thanks to our excellent maritime infrastructure, even the largest tankers can berth here.

As a result, the vast majority of our crude oil is delivered by supertankers ships up to over 400,000 tons DW and with a draft of over 22 meters. The unloaded oil can be stored in 39 tanks, each holding 114,000 m³. Each tank has a diameter of 85 meters and a height of 22 meters, making them the largest in the Rotterdam port area.

Pipelines run from the terminal to each of the partners, with the longest pipeline running to the Zeeland Refinery in Vlissingen , measuring 140 km.

The entire terminal is remotely controlled from a central control room with an advanced computer system.

Combined with our own storage facilities and an extensive underground pipeline network for crude oil transport, this creates an attractive situation for our partners.

WHAT WE DO

Thanks to our excellent maritime infrastructure, even the largest tankers can moor here. Approximately 240 tankers annually transport between 35 and 40 million tons of oil. This represents a third of the total crude oil supplied to Rotterdam. Storage takes place in large tanks.

The oil is distributed through numerous pipelines. Continuous attention to safety and the environment contributes to a safe and healthy working environment that harmonizes with the abundant natural environment of the Maasvlakte.

We have two jetties available for unloading tankers. Discharge lines run beneath the road surface from the head of the jetty to the connection to the pipeline network at the terminal. The jetties are designed to accommodate the very largest tankers, up to 460 meters in length and with a draft of up to 22 meters.

Mooring a supertanker requires the utmost concentration from everyone involved. Assistance is available in the form of a laser docking system. Large electronic displays on the jetty display the pilot's approach speed to the jetty. This information is recorded in the control room.

We regularly receive tankers from the VLCC category: Very Large Crude Carriers. Both jetties have four unloading arms. The MOT operators use a wireless remote control to connect these arms. Once all safety procedures have been completed, unloading begins. The berth time at the jetty depends on the size of the vessel and varies between 24 and 48 hours.

An extensive pipeline system with remotely controlled valves distributes the oil to the storage tanks. Distribution to users is accomplished using large pumps. The crude oil is pumped to refineries or other terminals via the regional pipeline network. All Dutch refineries receive oil from MOT. Some pipelines also connect to the international grid. Besides being an efficient mode of transport, pipelines are also exceptionally safe.

The vast majority of the supply is initially stored in one of the 39 tanks. The tanks are 22 meters high and have a diameter of 85 meters. In terms of height, this is comparable to a seven-story building, and the total surface area of a tank is equal to the area of a large football field. Each tank can store approximately 114,000 m³ of crude oil. If this quantity is converted into gasoline in a refinery, it will yield enough gasoline to power over 90,000 cars for a year.

CRUDE OIL
Crude oil, also called petroleum, is delivered to MOT from various continents by supertanker. It's often thought that all crude oil is so viscous that it's difficult to pump and always intensely black. However, petroleum can be as fluid as olive oil and is often brown. Besides fuel for cars, scooters, ships, and airplanes, crude oil is also the "engine" of the chemical industry. For example, some of the naphtha and gases obtained during the refining process are used in the chemical industry. There, it forms the basis for other products that have become indispensable to everyday life, such as plastics, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
